Image and video formats in Tonfotos

Tonfotos can open and index files in many different formats.

Image formats

  • JPEG (.jpeg, .jpg and .jfif file extensions)
  • PNG (.png file extension)
  • GIF (.gif file extension)
  • SVG (.svg file extension)
  • TIFF (.tiff, .tif file extensions)
  • HEIC (.heic file extension): macOS and Windows only. On Windows requires installation of free Microsoft codecs.
  • AVIF (.avif file extension)
  • WebP (.webp file extension)
  • DDS (.dds file extension): Windows only
  • BMP (.bmp file extension): Windows only
  • RAW image formats:
    • CRW, CR2, CR3, NEF, RAF, DNG
    • MOS, KDC, DCR, 3FR, ARI, ARW
    • BAY, CS1, FFF, IIQ, K25, KC2
    • MEF, MOS, MRW, ORF, PEF, RAW
    • RW2, SR2, SRW, X3F

Video formats

NOTE: Tonfotos can preview and open most videos in these formats, but for some videos using non-typical codecs, this may not be possible.

  • MOV, AVI, MP4, WMV, AVCHD
  • MKV, WEBM, VOB, MTS, M2TS
  • MPG, MP2, MPEG, MPE, MPV
  • MV2, M4V, 3GP, MOD

Metadata support

Tonfotos can read photo metadata in EXIF and XMP formats from most of supported image formats if those formats support storing it. For formats that don't (such as majority of RAW formats or ancient formats like BMP), it supports reading metadata from Sidecar XMP file.

Also, Tonfotos can read QuickTime tags (such as GPS location) from MOV/MP4 video files.

However, currently Tonfotos can modify embedded metadata for JPEG, HEIC, TIFF and PNG formats only. For other formats editing tags, GPS location, caption, comment, etc. is not available.
