Convert Photos
Tonfotos lets you convert photos to a different format and change their quality or size at the same time with the help of its export functionality.
Use cases
Saving storage space
Large photo files consume storage. Compressing them reduces file size without significant quality loss.
Sharing a photo collection
Your friends' devices may not support the same image format as yours. Converting photos ensures they work across platforms and applications.
Web optimization
Smaller image files load faster on websites, improving user experience on mobile devices.
Exporting photos
To export photos, follow these steps:
Select the photos you want to export. To open the Export options dialog, press CtrlShiftE or right-click the files and select Export..., or select Photo > Export... in the main menu.
In the Export options dialog, select the Format:
- JPEG: Good for most photos, balances compression and quality, widely supported by all devices.
- PNG: Ideal for graphics, has transparency support. Maximum and High quality are the same for PNG.
- WebP: Offers superior compression, great for web use.
Choose the image Quality:
- Maximum: Preserves most details; larger file size. Use this option if you are going to work with the photo in a professional graphic editor.
- High: Good for long-term storage, balances quality and size. Use this option if you want to print the photos in the future.
- Medium: Works well for screens, smaller file size. Use this option to save storage and view your photos later.
- Compact: Best for web use, smallest file size with a tolerable amount of compression artifacts. To achieve an even smaller file size, combine this option with reducing image size.
Choose the exported image Size:
- Original means that the dimensions won't change.
- Max width, Max height, and Max dimension set the upper limit to width, height, or both image dimensions. If the image is already smaller its size won't change. Tonfotos maintains the aspect ratio automatically.
You can also export the image metadata by checking the Metadata: Include checkbox.
Choose where to save the converted photos. If you choose the original folder, the exported files are renamed to avoid overwriting.
Click Export to start the process.
NOTE: Export always re-compresses the photos and subtly changes their contents, even if you choose maximum quality and original file size. If you want the original photos, simply copy them: CtrlC or Photo > Copy Files.
