Reuse the Picasa catalog information in Tonfotos

If you used to keep your photo library in Picasa, you can use its catalog information, such as albums and people's names, in Tonfotos. You won't have to re-enter the data manually.

Data from Picasa

Picasa stores the catalog information for each folder in a file called .picasa.ini within that folder. Make sure that these files aren't removed from the folders with photos.

To reuse the data from Picasa, add the folder with your Picasa catalog to Tonfotos library locations. Tonfotos will parse the data from .picasa.ini and add this data to the catalog.

The following catalog information will be kept:

  • People's faces and names
  • Albums
  • Any info written into image metadata, because it's stored in the images themselves: dates, geolocation, tags, title, comment, and other metadata

Picasa has been discontinued by Google and receives no further updates. There is no support for moving your Tonfotos catalog information back to Picasa. Tonfotos will read the information from .picasa.ini on first indexing, but will never update it.

Issue with duplicated persons

Sometimes Picasa may assign different IDs to the same person while keeping their name the same. In this case, after indexing with Tonfotos, you will see two or more entries with the same name in the People tab.

This is easy to fix: Tonfotos will suggest merging people with the same name when you right-click on one of them. Select Merge all <person name> and confirm.
